So you like the idea of what Plant a Border offers. You might even have some ideas of your own. The question you might be thinking about now is how it works. In practice.
And you're staring to wonder if you really can have that border of your dreams. Or one that you might have seen on a visit to a garden last summer...........
Well in short the answer is yes you can. Have the border of your dreams. But there are a few things that we do need to think about.
The good news is though all you have to do are a few simple things. And let us do the rest!
This is what you need to do:
Get your tape and trowel out.
Take some really simple measurements. The width and length of the area that you'd like to plant up. Make a sketched plan and note any existing plants or features that are in the area or that might affect the area - cast a shadow for instance.
Then have a dig. What we need to consider are a few things. Firstly how deep is the soil? Is it nice, deep, humus rich soil, or is it a thin layer of dry, sandy soil covering builders' rubble - or perhaps something in between?
Next we need to understand what type of soil you have - clay, silt or sand - or again something in between. Have a look here to help you decide that - link soil blog.
Write that down on your sketched plan.
Sit and watch.
That's the hard work done! Now you need to observe the garden at different times of the day. What we're looking to understand now is at what times different parts of your garden or border are enjoying hot sun. And when it might be cast in shade.
Add that to your sketched plan too. If you have a compass, or a compass app on your phone, then make a note which way your garden or border faces. And add that to the plan!
Think colours.
Carry on sitting in your garden. Think and dream about the sort of colours that you like and might want in your new border. Something that compliments whatever you already have? Or something completely different?
Are you wanting all round colour and interest, or something more seasonal? Flowers, leaves or grasses? Guess what you now need to do? Yes - add those details to your sketched plan too!
Get in touch.
All you then need to do is get in touch. You can email, call or send us a WhatsApp message. If you take a photo of your sketched plan - and any other photos you might have - then send that to us too.
What happens next?
Well then it's over to us. We get to work on coming up with something that will turn your dream into a reality. If we have any questions then we'll let you know.
Then we'll let you have our thoughts and an idea of the cost of the plants. If you're happy with that and ask us to go ahead then we'll source and personally hand pick your plants for you. If when we get to the nursery the plants don't look their best then we don't pick them.
If we wouldn't pick them for our garden then we wouldn't pick them for yours.
We tend to go to one of our chosen nurseries once a week - either to pick plants for our Plant a Border customers, to pick plants for gardens that we're working on or for our regular Plant a Border plant sales in Frome.
When the trailer is full and we've brought everything home we then get in touch with you and agree a date and time when it would be convenient for us to personally deliver your plants to you.
And then if, of course, you need anything to help manage your soil and prepare the border for planting, then we'd be happy to help. And if you'd like us to either help you plant the border, or would like us to do it for you, then we'd be delighted to talk things through.
Then all you have to do is keep your new border suitably fed and watered - all details will be available on the Plant a Border website to help you do that - and of course sit back and enjoy it!
