Plant a Border - buying plants online

Updated: May 4, 2023

Now I know that we all naturally have a slight worry about buying plants online. I know I do. I always debated over and over in my mind about what plants I'd get would look like and if they'd be any good?

Well fear not. Let me reassure you. Let's talk about the most important thing - plants. This is how we do it.

Who picks the plant I receive?

I pick the plants. No one else. Just me. I personally visit the nursery and hand select the plants that you order, or I'm selling. I'm registered with DEFRA as a professional plant supplier (139545) and, for me, it's one of the many things I enjoy about doing what I do.

I use my experience and professional contacts to bring you the best plants that are available - whether that's seasonal herbaceous perennials, shrubs or trees. I don't supply house or bedding plants, or veg strips - I leave that to others who are better able to do so.

Will what I get actually look like it does in the picture?

The plants that I offer will look like the photograph that you see on the website.

I might use stock images where I want to show what the plants might look like once they're matured, but alongside that I'll always add a photograph of the plant that I'm supplying. If on the very odd occasion that's not possible then I'll make that crystal clear.

That way you know exactly what you're getting. No surprises.

What size of plant will I get?

Well that depends on what you order! All of the perennials come in either 3 or 5 litre pots. I rarely supply plants that come in 9cm pots. The reason that I do that is that I find that a 3 or 5 litre pot represents the best balance between an healthy established plant and what it costs.

Again the website will make it absolutely clear. There's nothing worse than thinking you're buying a larger, more established plant only to receive one in a 9cm pot.

That clarity also enables you to have a look around and see what others are offering. It enables you to compare apples with apples, Rather than apples with pears!

What if when it arrives it doesn't look that healthy?

Well as I'm picking the plants I guarantee that they will. Look healthy. If they don't look healthy when I go to pick them then they don't get picked! It's as simple as that.

And what if they get battered during delivery? Well they won't. Because I'll be personally looking after them, and delivering them to your door.

But if when you get them you don't think they look that healthy then I'll simply take them home again. No questions asked.

How much does it cost to have it delivered?

The hidden extra. Particularly if you want "express delivery" or if the size of the plant means it needs to be added to a pallet and you have to wait for the "next available delivery".

Well provided you live within a 25 mile radius of Frome, and we can find a time that suits us both, then delivery is free. If you're slightly further afield then we can have a chat. I can source the plants for you and bring them along to my next plant sale in Frome. And you can come along and sample all of the delights that Frome has to offer!
